I’m not sure what I expected of the MDS to be ho

I’m not sure what I expected of the MDS to be honest. People who had done it before were telling me how much I would love it and how great it is. I’m not sure that’s how I feel.
I feel, let down in a way. The MDS is billed as the “toughest foot race on Earth” and it certainly lived up to that. Many things added or changed this year to ensure its reputation stayed in tact, but one thing that changed was that the race was later in the year, meaning it was hotter. My god, was it hot.
When you look at the website for the MDS the temperature always says something below 30 degrees?! Well, on the lunchtime of the long day, it had reached 50 degrees.
The starting stage was also longer this year, 36km and a punishingly difficult course. The website states a 95% success rate. At lunchtime of day 4 over 300 of the just over 1000 people that started, had dropped out.
The medical tent on a an evening looked like something out of a Vietnam War film, IV drips hooked on to pieces of string, dangling above shaking, vomiting and convulsing bodies. Moans and groans across the camp as people crawled back in. I described the camp to someone as a mix between a refugee camp and a zombie land apocalypse.
Each day the race gave your body something new to conquer, whether it was longer in the soft sand or harder climbs. By Day 4 my body was done. I could see the check point in the desert haze, wobbling away in the distance. Sickness had been bubbling for about a kilometre to a point I had to be sick. The next 48 hours were some of the craziest, lowest points of my life. No one ever wants to DNF but when you’re found on the trail, passed out in your own vomit, a decision is made, DNF. My SOS buzzer was pressed by someone I don’t even know, I can’t even tell you their name, to them, thank you.
I awoke to a French medic throwing warm water at me. My race was done. I was scraped up, helped into a vehicle and folded onto the floor at Check point 2, no room in medical, just my head managed to get in the shade. 6 hours I laid, and baked, no one bothered to check I was breathing, conscious anything at all really. I was broken.

For those that have maybe been tracking me. You will have seen me DNF. Not loads of details but a horrible experience. They found me near the side of the trail, passed out, in my own sick. I came round after they threw water at me but was withdrawn with heat stroke at CP2. I’ll update more soon. This is probably going to be my last post for about 10 days. I’ll try add to my stories on my way but once in the desert the phone is gone!

The training is finished, the bags are packed, I’m ready. I’m so glad to have finished using the sauna suit. On Monday night using the sauna suit I shed 8lbs in 40 minutes. #horrible. The @marathondessables has been on the “to do” list for some time now and I’m lucky that I have @drivelodgeroofs and @jtwaring who have sponsored this for me. Without them it would have remained out of reach.

My bib number is 1003 and my tent is 96. I’ve spoken to my students this week about the reasons why we do things and about our fear of failure. I keep telling them that nothing is worse for me than just not trying.

It’s exactly one week til the marathondessables.

It’s exactly one week til the marathondessables. In fact this time next week I will be in the sand, with my fellow competitors getting ready for the first night in the desert.

Right now I’m just tapering the training, 2 more sessions in the sauna suit left. All has pretty much gone to plan so far…….

I feel pretty strong. I’ve done much more conditioning training this time than I ever have before. I’ve taken a lot of these workouts from @hyroxworkouts. Blasts of running and weights to get my body in the best shape.

11 days to go til the @marathondessables. I’ve watched so many videos and spoken to so many people that I actually think it’s time to stop watching the videos and to do my own thing. I’m still tinkering with kit, trying to get my self as comfortable as I can possibly be (in the desert). I feel very strong and fit going into it.

I get asked a lot how I train for ultras. I try and do a combination of things, cycling, running, weights and circuits. Running distance certainly isn’t just about running. Your body has to be strong enough to take the punishment that running will give it.

Over the last few weeks I have focussed on conditioning using @hyroxworkouts to build my endurance further and push my limits. Doing these workouts in a sauna suit to try get my body used to the heat is horrible.

I’ve used @brownbagprotein to help me recover and will be taking a protein porridge combination out with me to get the calories in.

Now it’s all about maintenance.

You have to learn from failure. You have to unders

You have to learn from failure. You have to understand that failure doesn’t mean that it’s the end, it means we start again, we learn. I get frustrated with social media that there is not enough said about the work that people have put in to achieve the things they have done. They don’t show the set backs, they don’t show the agony. I try and teach my students that things don’t always go as planned, but when they don’t, pick yourself up, go back to work and try again.

This last few weeks have been tough, training for MDS along with teaching getting close to exam time is always hard.

Learn from mistakes, dust yourself off and go again.

Todays workout was a killer but as the post says…. My body loved it. I love the feeling of pushing my body, I enjoy seeing at what point my mind starts to think of quitting.

6 rounds
4 minute free runner - pace 13.5kph or faster
3 minute rower pace - 1.40/500 metre split
2 minute Ski erg - 1100 cals an hour pace
1 minute farmers walk 32kg k bells in each hand (had to hold a 20 and 12).
No rest = horrific.

All about building the engine. Ultra runners out there will be saying log loads of miles, but for me I have other challenges others goals as well as the marathondessables.

For so long the marathondessables seemed like it wasn’t going to happen. Mainly as it’s mega expensive. Luckily @jtwaring and @drivelodgeroofs came along. After a little bit of time to think after the Wattbike it’s been nice to gradually get back into the gym and on the bike again. I have thought a lot about the challenge since, even while I was sat in hospital I couldn’t turn my mind off. Now I’m just going to be doing things at my pace. For many they might still think it’s too fast, too much. But for me, I love the buzz of life, the hectic, frantic rush that comes with it. So the next challenge is already on the way. Update. Thanks for all the messages last night. I had a momentary stop of blood to my heart. I’ve had more scans and blood tests than I ever thought possible. I can safely say it scared the sh1t out of me.
I’m back home now and feeling much better. Thanks to Jim @coldbathbrewing and John and Derek from @chevincyclesltd. At my weakest they were brilliant.
I felt like we had battled through the cramps and through the horrible early hours and were sat in a good groove and making good progress. It all changed in seconds.
